This mission was assigned to the Makkah Police Department in 1343 H., which assumed full responsibility for passports and resident permits (Iqama). A specialized system for passports and travel procedures was needed to streamline and define regulations, as well as to build diplomatic relations, social and commercial activities, and arrangements for Hajj pilgrims.
The main achievements of the General Directorate of Passports include:
Establishing main passport administrations throughout the Kingdom and sub-administrations in major cities.
Organizing the exit and entry of pilgrims each year through the Kingdom’s ports.
Implementing the Electronic Saudi Passport System with high-security specifications.
Implementing financial systems to facilitate the payment of passport fees through banks.
