Hegra was the southern city of the Nabataean kingdom, whose capital was Petra. Its tombs, carved about 2,000 years ago, carry decorated facades and inscriptions that name their owners.
The site was inscribed by UNESCO in 2008. Visits are by ticketed tour, which starts from a visitor centre and moves between the main tomb groups.
