Al-Balad, Historic Jeddah

City centre · allow 3–4 hours

Al-Balad grew as the gateway port for pilgrims heading to Makkah. Its tall houses were built from coral stone cut from the Red Sea, with wooden balconies that let breezes in while keeping interiors shaded and private.

The district was inscribed by UNESCO in 2014. Restored houses, small museums, cafés and traditional markets make it the best place to understand old Jeddah on foot.

Visitor tips

  • Go in the late afternoon and stay into the evening.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for uneven lanes.
