Share:

At-Turaif was founded in the 15th century and became the capital of the first Saudi state in the 18th century. Its palaces, mosques and defensive walls are built in the Najdi style: sun-dried mud brick, thick walls with small triangular openings and crenellated parapets.

The district was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010. Restored buildings host galleries that explain the history of the Saudi state, daily life and Najdi architecture, and the site is lit in the evening.

Across the valley, the Bujairi terrace is a cluster of restaurants and cafés with a direct view of At-Turaif, which makes an evening visit the most popular choice.

Visitor tips

  • Tickets are sold online; check opening hours before you go.
  • Arrive before sunset to see the mud walls in golden light.
  • Wear comfortable shoes — the lanes are long and uneven.
