Masmak Fortress was built in the late 19th century from mud and clay, with four corner watchtowers and a thick wooden gate. In 1902 King Abdulaziz recaptured Riyadh here — the event that began the founding of the modern Kingdom.
Today the fort is a museum with displays, maps and models that tell the story of the recapture and of old Riyadh. It sits in the Al-Dirah district, a short walk from Souq Al-Zal and Al-Adl Square.
Visitor tips
- Combine it with Souq Al-Zal in one evening walk.
- Look for the spearhead still lodged in the main gate.
- Opening hours change on Fridays; check before you go.
